The “Erzgebirge” is one of the most beautiful low mountain ranges and is placed quaintly on the border of the Czech Republic in southeast Germany. The highest mountain of the “Erzgebirge” is located in Böhmen. The “Keilberg” is exactly 1244 meters high. Its “brother” on the German side is the “Fichtelberg” with 1215 meters. In this magically looking low mountain range there are 30 more mountains and most of them are almost 1000 meters high. They all nestle around the “Keilberg” and the “Fichtelberg”. The “Erzgebirge” is a place of experience for everyone who emphasizes the colourful richness of the world of animals and plants. The fallow buck, the deer, the fox and the wild pig live here in wild nature. With a little luck you will also see the “curiosities” of the animal world of the “Erzgebirge” like the hazel dormouse or the wildcat.

Das Erzgebirge im Winter - The Ore Mountains in Winter.
Up in the highmoors especially in Böhmen there are still living several species of frogs. Sometimes you can meet the black grouse or you can enjoy the wagtail building a nest along the rivers. Other eyecatchers are the numerous mountain meadows with their wild growing herbages. Between the cities and towns wonderful coniferous and deciduous forests invite you to hike or relax. During the winter season the cross country ski-tracks are an Eldorado for every winter sport fan. The unique countryside makes the woods and meadows look like a gorgeous panorama all year round. The name “Erzgebirge” comes from the ore deposits in the 16th century. Especially silver, copper and tin have been brought to the surface. Today there are still countless attestations of tin mining in the whole area. Once there were trade routes over the mountains from the kingly Dresden to the golden Prag. For protection a system of masterly castles were built. Around these castles the humans settled down and built cities and towns. After the declension of mining the human life changed. Barbara Uthmann brought the bobbin lacemaking into this region. These days the German part of the “Erzgebirge” became famous through its typical folk art. The traditions have been maintained until today.
Not unavailingly the “Erzgebirge” has also the name “Weihnachtsland” (Christmas Land). During the advent and Christmas season angel and miner, nutcracker, smoking wood man and the arched candle stand decorate the snuggeries of the “Erzgebirger”. This region is a joy to visit in every season of the year. Whether you are here in the winterly sunshine and drive with your skiers through the fabulous sparkly snow or whether you want to enjoy the wonderful mountains and valleys while hiking or riding a bike on our excellent Natureways, you are going to enjoy and experience with all your senses.
